Craft and Dough: Review

Craft & Dough, the latest offering from The Milestone group, conveys a sense of a hip and up-and-coming side of Sheffield, with a nod to its old industrial roots. As the name might suggest, Craft & Dough specialises in freshly made pizza and craft beer with an impressive drinks menu spanning over six pages.

Nestled in the heart of Kelham Island, Craft & Dough serves a host of different pizzas with far more exciting toppings than your average pizza joint. As a typically indecisive person, I was not in any position to choose one single pizza, so Adam agreed that we could share the two that appealed to us most. After much deliberation, we eventually settled for the Tandoori Chicken Breast pizza - with raita, chilli and mango salsa, Bombay mix and fresh coriander (£7.50) and the Nduja pizza - spicy Calabrian sausage, tomato, mozzarella and fresh basil (£7.50).

The Tandoori chicken pizza was my favourite of the two with its exciting flavour combinations and the variety of textures. The beautifully light and crispy base, the silky raita, the delicate Tandoori spice, the lifting coriander and the crunch of the Bombay mix packed the pizza with enough aromatic flavour to entice all of the senses. Up until now, I had never tried a tandoori pizza before but it 100% works and Craft & Dough's delivers something really quite unique and special.

The Nduja pizza, although not as impressive as the Tandoori chicken pizza, was still really tasty. The Nduja sausage was fiery and full of spice, yet when combined with the simple but refined flavours of the tomato, basil and mozzarella sitting beneath, it wasn't too overpowering and instead complimented the existing flavours with a fierce kick.

Being the greedy pigs that we are, we also decided to order some fries to share to go with our pizzas. Craft & Dough's skinny fries (£2) come with the option of adding herb salt or parmesan for an extra 50p. The fries were crispy and perfectly seasoned with the portion adequate for sharing. We opted for parmesan which did add an enhancing tang, but I probably wouldn't bother in future as I felt it wasn't really needed with all of the flavour going on elsewhere.

In an establishment with such an extensive craft beer list, it would be a shame to pass up on the opportunity to sample some of their huge selection; however I don't like beer so it was an opportunity wasted on me! Despite this, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that they have a wide range of ciders to appease fusspots like myself. I spied the Thistly Cross Elderflower cider straight away and, as a lover of all things elderflower, knew that it was the one for me. It was light, crisp and ideal for a refreshing summer drink which, in my eyes, ticks all of the boxes that a good cider should. Perfect!

The high quality of food and the loving care taken over the ingredients is something which is apparent across all of The Milestone group's establishments and it really shows. The pizzas deliver both taste and value for money, whilst the drinks menu has just about every type of beer you could ever want, as well as lots of other options too. I am yet to sample any of Craft & Dough's starters or desserts so next time I return I've got my eyes set on the courgette fries to start, and maybe a brownie for dessert, but if the pizzas are anything to go by I'm sure they'll be winners too! Craft & Dough's loyalty scheme is also worth checking out - you get 1 stamp for every pizza bought and you only need 6 stamps to get a free pizza. Easy! I know I'll definitely be going back for more...
